The term used in RFC2960 to describe a protocol
relationship between SCTP endpoints. SCTP (Stream
Control Transmission Protocol)
association is composed of two SCTP endpoints
and protocol state information including verification tags (a 32-bit unsigned
integer that is randomly generated) and the currently active set of
Transmission Sequence Numbers
(TSNs). The association can be uniquely identified by the transport addresses
used by the endpoints in the association.

RFC 2960: Stream Control Transmission Protocol This document describes the Stream Control Transmission Protocol (SCTP). SCTP is designed to transport PSTN signaling messages over IP networks, but is capable of broader applications.
RFC 3436: TLS over SCTP This document describes the usage of the Transport Layer Security (TLS) protocol, as defined in [RFC2246], over the Stream Control Transmission Protocol (SCTP), as defined in [RFC2960] and [RFC3309].
