Data about data. Metadata describes how and when and by whom a particular set of data was collected, and how the data is formatted. Metadata is essential for understanding information stored in data warehouses and has become increasingly important in XML-based Web applications.

Metadata indices and HTML interface This paper discusses the utility of relational database-based metadata catalogs in keeping track of astronomical and geophysical observations, the use of WWW servers and client forms to allow access to the catalogs, graphical interfaces, and a proposal for a distributed system of databases serving the entire astronomical and geophysical community.
